While Jim Parsons portrayed Sheldon Cooper in The Big Bang Theory, Young Sheldon introduced us to Iain Armitage as the young Sheldon Cooper. The American actor Iain Armitage has also impressed the fandom with his performance in HBO’s Big Little Lies.
Fun fact: the character of Sheldon Cooper isn’t entirely a creation of fiction, as he is inspired by one of the acquaintances of the series’ co-creator, Bill Prady. He is a child prodigy who has been highly attracted to science since childhood. His intellect often unknowingly causes people around him to develop an inferiority complex. As a genius, he pursued high school at the age of nine and started higher studies at the age of fourteen. Since childhood, the fictional character wanted to pursue physics, and The Big Bang Theory sees the adult Sheldon as a physicist.
Sheldon Cooper’s strict mother, Mary Cooper, like any other mother, can do anything for the betterment of her kids. However, sometimes, she gets really strict if her instructions are not followed. Mary was a rebellious child who caused many troubles for her parents, and she didn’t want her children to repeat the same mistakes she had made in her youth.
Emmy Award winner Laurie Metcalf played Mary Cooper in The Big Bang Theory, and American actress Zoe Perry portrayed her in Young Sheldon. For the unacquainted, Zoe Perry is the daughter of Laurie Metcalf, and it’s intriguing seeing them play the same character in different shows set in the same universe.
George Cooper Sr. was the father of Missy, Georgie, Sheldon, and the husband of Mary. He was a football coach at a prestigious school. He died several years before the events of The Big Bang Theory, so we didn’t get to catch up with the character and see him be a part of adult Sheldon’s world.
However, Lance Barber, who portrayed the character in Young Sheldon, appeared in one of the episodes of The Big Bang Theory as Leonard’s college friend. It’s weird, isn’t it?
Missy Cooper, Sheldon’s twin sister, doesn’t share similar personality traits with her brother. For instance, Sheldon had a never-ending love for science and maths, while Missy has never been a fan of these subjects. Secondly, Sheldon lacks social skills, and Missy is someone who can communicate easily, even with strangers. She often teams up with Georgie to annoy Sheldon and grab their parents’ attention. However, like Sheldon, Missy has a better EQ, so she is always there to comfort her brothers whenever they feel low.
Happy Endings’ actress Courtney Henggeler plays the character in The Big Bang Theory, while the prequel series sees the American actress Raegan Revord in her shoes.
Georgie Cooper is Missy and Sheldon’s elder brother. However, his parents often compare him with their younger son, Sheldon, because he isn’t good at academics. That’s one reason Georgie maintained a distance from Sheldon and grew closer to Missy over time.
Montana Jordan plays Georgie Cooper in Young Sheldon, and Jerry O’Connell plays him in The Big Bang Theory.
Constance was the maternal grandmother of the Cooper kids. Even though she was fond of Sheldon, sometimes she struggled to understand the young genius’s mindset. However, she was among the few people who knew that Sheldon would achieve something massive. Moreover, she could cheer anyone around her with sarcastic one-liners.
The Big Bang Theory features June Squibb as Constance and the Ghostbusters famed actress Annie Potts portrays the character in Young Sheldon.
Marry Cooper starts following Christianity to control her life, so her family often visits the Church to accompany her. Jeff Difford is a pastor at the same Church. Sheldon often engages in debates with him as he doesn’t like the pastor at all for his principles and beliefs. Jeff Difford is portrayed by the American actor and comedian Matt Hobby in Young Sheldon.
Amanda was Georgie’s love interest. The duo met in Constance’s laundry room, and since then, Georgie has been head over heels in love with Amanda. She and Georgie eventually get married in the last season of Young Sheldon. The character is played by Emily Osment, whom some of you might know from Hannah Montana.
These are the main cast and characters of Young Sheldon. Of course, we get to see several other characters making appearances in the TV show. However, the ones we’ve discussed are the most crucial ones, and they play significant roles in the story.
