Who Is Krypto the Superdog in Superman: Powers and Abilties

Krypto the Superdog made his first appearance in1955 in Adventure Comics #210. Initially, it was supposed to be just a one-timeappearance but it gained such a positive response that Krypto became a regular character in Superman comics.
Krypto was just a regular pet dog back on Krypton who lived with the House of El, Superman’s family. When Kal-El’s parents discovered that Krypton would not survive for too long, they started building an escape pod for Kal, and Krypto was used as a test subject for them. However, after they launched the pod for testing, they were unable to bring it back and Krypto got lost in space.
When Krypton fell, Kal-El was put on the escape pod and was headed to Earth. Miraculously, Krypto was still alive and his pod caught Kal’s ship’s signal and started following the same trajectory. Kal reached Earth way before Krypto did and started living as Clark Kent. When Krypto reached Earth and found Clark, he was already a teenager but the boy and the dog bonded immediately and became best friends for life.
In modern depictions, Krypto the Superdog is usually portrayed as a mixed breed between aWhite Labrador and a Pitbull. However, throughout DC comics,since Krypto’s first appearance, it has not been specified exactly what breed it is. So whether it’s an animated adaptation or live-action, creators have the liberty to choose from all the different breeds of dogs.
Since Krypto the Superdog is from Krypton, it too has the same effect as Earth’s sun had on Clark. Thus, giving Krypto similar powers to Superman.Krypto can fly,has super strength, and also has X-ray vision. His powers also include heat vision and invincibility. However, since Krypto has all the same powers as Superman, it also has the same weakness, Kryptonite.
Krypto the Superdog met his death doing what any dog would do, protecting his owner, i.e. Superman.In ‘Whatever Happened To The Man of Tomorrow?’ the non-canonical pre-crisis Superman story, Superman was attacked by Kryptonite Man. When Krypto saw that Superman was going to lose and eventually die, Krypto bit the neck off of Kryptonite Man killing him instantly but since Krypto’s weakness is Kryptonite as well, it died of Kryptonite poisoning.
As of now, all we know is that Krypto is going to be a part of the Superman movie, and the specifications of his role are not yet known to us. However, since it is literally Superman’s best friend, it will probably have a lot to screentime and might also work as a comic relief in the movie.
