After losing Rhaenys and Meleys, the Blacks run out of powerful dragons. Well, some great and legendary dragons lie in the Dragonstone but don’t have riders. So, in House of the Dragon Season 2 Episode 7, Rhaenyra called out some potent candidates who would tame the deadly beasts and fight for her cause. Learning about the massive event, several knights, sailors, and bastards showed up, and one among them was Hugh Hammer, who managed to claim Vermithor, one of the largest dragons. But, who is Hugh Hammer, and who are his parents?

Who Is Hugh Hammer

Who Is Hugh Hammer

Hugh Hammer was a Targaryen bastard on the Dragonstone. As we saw in Season 2, he was subject to poverty and his daughter died because of no food. Hugh Hammer was married to a woman named Kat. While his lineage has not been revealed completely, in Episode 7, he reveals about his mother.

Hugh’s mother’s name was Saera, the daughter of Jahearys I. In the books, Saera worked in the pleasure house, which is how Hugh describes his mother in Episode 7. While nothing is known about Hugh’s father, his mother’s lineage is enough to make him a dragonrider.

Hugh Hammer participated in the ‘Sowing of the Seeds’ event and successfully mounted the Bronze Fury dragon, Vermithor. The huge dragon remained unused since the death of his previous rider, King Jahaerys I Targaryen. Initially, Hugh Hammer, alongsideUlf White, fought for the Blacks against the Triarchy. Following the win, when Rhaenyra gained the King’s Landing, she declared them knights and gave them small lands on Driftmark.

During the first battle of Tumbleton, he, along with another dragonseed named Ulf White, was sent to confront Ormund Hightower and protect the markets of Tumbleton. However, Alicent’s cousin brutally defeated the duo. Hugh Hammer and Ulf White were already disappointed by Rhaenyra, so they betrayed her and sided with the Greens.

After betraying Rhaenyra, Hugh Hammer declared he would be the king. He also justifies this announcement with an old prophecy, ‘When the hammer will fall on the dragon, a new king will emerge, and no one will dare to stop him.’ Besides that, in his over-confidence, he said that he has everything that is needed to rule a kingdom.

Later, when the Greens were about to launch an attack on King’s Landing, Hugh Hammer and his friend Ulf White denied joining them as their demands were yet to be met. Following Aegon II’s disappearance and Aemond’s death, when Daeron was about to take the Iron Throne’s possession, Hugh mocked him by saying that the Kingdom needed a strong man to be their king.

Hugh’s actions provoked the Caltrops to decide his fate. So, when Ulf White was sleeping after drinking too much, and Hugh was preparing for the battle, they ambushed Hugh and killed him most brutally.
