The previous episode kickstarted with Jushiro Ukitake all set to sacrifice himself by performing the Kamikake ritual so that Mimihage could save the world from collapsing after the Soul King’s death. Mimihage is the divine soul’s right hand, after all.
After that, we get a glimpse of Ukitake’s childhood when his parents were sitting beside him as he was about to die due to an incurable lung disease.
